From Scratch: Cozy Cabbage, Potato & Carrot Soup
Share
At KHEM Studios, we believe great meals start with great tools—and even greater ingredients. In our latest Gather + Cook episode, we take you through the process of making a nourishing Cabbage, Potato & Carrot Soup, starting with a rich, homemade chicken stock.
This recipe is all about simplicity, using humble ingredients to create something deeply satisfying. It’s a perfect dish for chilly days, when you want something warm, hearty, and full of flavor. And, of course, we’re prepping everything on our Butcher Block and Walnut Plain Board, both designed to make cooking feel as good as it tastes.
Why Start with Homemade Chicken Stock?
The foundation of this soup is a slow-simmered chicken stock, made from scratch. If you’ve never made your own stock before, this is your sign to start. It’s a game-changer—richer, more flavorful, and packed with nutrients that store-bought broth just can’t match. Plus, it’s a great way to use up leftover bones and vegetable scraps, making it a sustainable choice for your kitchen.
The Ingredients
This soup is as simple as it gets, but each ingredient plays a role in bringing warmth and depth to every spoonful. Here’s what you’ll need:
- Homemade chicken stock (or high-quality store-bought if you're in a pinch)
- Cabbage – Adds sweetness and texture
- Potatoes – Creamy and hearty
- Carrots – A touch of natural sweetness
- Garlic & onions – The aromatic base for deep flavor
- Salt, pepper, and fresh herbs – To bring everything together
The Process
- Make the Stock – If you haven’t already, simmer chicken bones, onion, garlic, and herbs in water for several hours. Strain and set aside.
- Chop & Prep – Using our Butcher Block and Walnut Plain Board, dice the cabbage, potatoes, and carrots.
- Sauté & Simmer – Sauté onions and garlic in a heavy pot, then add the carrots, potatoes, and cabbage. Pour in your homemade stock, season, and let it all simmer until tender.
- Taste & Enjoy – Adjust seasoning, garnish with fresh herbs, and serve hot!
