Materials & Craftsmanship
Every KHEM Studios piece begins with responsibly sourced, solid American hardwoods. We don’t use veneers, imported parts, or mass-production methods—just real materials, real tools, and thoughtful design. We use premium, kiln-dried hardwoods to give you the beauty and stability of a truly organic, high-quality material—perfect for lasting furniture and cutting boards.
We build and finish everything in our studio in New York’s Hudson Valley, with deep attention to detail. Here’s a closer look at our core materials:
Cherry
Warm and rich, cherry darkens beautifully over time. It has a smooth grain and a natural reddish hue that deepens with age and use.
Hard Maple
Pale, creamy, and strong. Maple is dense and durable, making it ideal for high-use furniture. We also use it as a painted base for Farrow & Ball finishes.
American Black Walnut
Dark, elegant, and bold. Walnut’s rich grain and natural color variations bring depth and warmth to any piece.
White Oak
Strong and subtly patterned, white oak has a timeless, neutral tone that works well in modern and traditional settings alike.
Ebonized Ash
Ash that’s been darkened using a traditional ebonizing technique—this gives it a deep black color while preserving the texture of the grain.
Farrow & Ball on Hard Maple
Some pieces are available in a painted finish using Farrow & Ball’s richly pigmented, eco-friendly colors. We use a durable application process that highlights the form while allowing subtle texture to come through.
